Hawaii was the theme of my dad’s recent retirement party. Everyone who attended received a colorful lei. And so my nephew, Gavin, asked guests whether they were going to keep their leis toward the end of the party. After he took my lei, I wondered, “Why on earth would he want so many leis?”
His intentions were to take his collection home, but his parents (my sister and her husband) quickly vetoed that idea. Gavin was absolutely crushed when he learned he could only take FIVE leis home (between him and his brother, I think they had about 75 leis).
So, right before taking off for home, Gavin and Ethan took turns piling on the colorful decorations around their heads and then picking out the five they wanted to take home. I can’t even imagine what they will do with five leis at home except leave them all over the place for Krissy to pick up.
