SKIRT PROJECT: TRUELOVE JULY
When I first started this skirt project — creating or refashioning 26 skirts — I had no idea it would take me a year to complete it. I’m six skirts away from finishing the Collection 26 project, and I’m pretty excited about seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. I’ve learned so much during the past year, and yet I have more to learn. Anyway, I found this beautiful red piece of remnant during one of my many excursions to a fabric store. I’m pretty sure I spent less than $2 for the pretty red remnant, thinking I could turn the fabric into a beautiful winter-Christmas skirt. I should’ve paid more attention to the information on the remnant wrapper because I’m not sure what type of fabric I’m working with. Meh. Whatever. All I know is the fabric is pretty stiff — probably not the best word to use. Working with a little less than half a yard, I simply hemmed the raw edges (lengthwise) and used a French seam, connecting the skirt’s sides (using my mom’s sewing machine). The length was perfect, but the skirt was a little big and I briefly thought about adding a zipper. But I didn’t want to mess up my beautiful red skirt, attempting to install my first zipper. Instead I ran a piece of elastic through the skirt’s back panel. And boom! My beautiful red skirt is finished! And I love it! It’s so pretty even if I don’t know what kind of fabric it is. I can’t wait to pair it with black tights and my black boots!
