CUSTOM TOTES FOR WHEELCHAIRS: With the leftover fabric from the upholstery project, I sewed a pillowcase for a body pillow and a cute tote to donate. Whenever I visit my mom at the nursing home, I noticed a mix of bags and totes hanging haphazardly on residents’ wheelchairs. The reusable grocery totes weren’t made to hang properly on the backs of wheelchairs, and that fact bothered me greatly.
Also, I think I’m the only person who noticed — and was bothered — the totes being twisted around to fit behind the wheelchairs. So, I decided to sew a cute tote that would fit properly. With the success of one tote, I turned a semi-failed pillowcase into another tote to donate. Within 30 minutes, I had another cute little tote with handles and small strip of velcro on the inside.
More totes made from old pillowcases. The nursing home staff seemed excited and gracious with the new totes, but unfortunately, I didn’t seem them hang the totes on the wheelchairs. I’m not sure how the staff divvy out donations, but I plan to keep an eye out for the cute totes during future visits with my mom.
